FunFact Friday!! Norrmalmstorg Syndrome

It's another Fun Fact Friday, and as usual but with an extra touch every new fact day, we packaged a new thrilling 'Did you know' for you.

Have you ever wondered like I always wonder why women who are physically abused still continue with their abusive partner?  And even defend them against whosoever wants to serve them justice?

Well if you live in this part of the world where I live, you'll easily say "It's Jazz" a kind of diabolic influence. But then it may be not and that's the reason for Fact Today.

===========\/==========

In 1973, Jan-Erik Olsson, a convict on parole took four employees of the bank (3 women and a man) hostage during a failed bank robbery in Kreditbanken,  one of the largest banks in Stockholm,  Sweden. He, assisted by his friend Clark Olofsson held the hostages  for six days (23rd - 28th Aug 1973) in one of the bank's vaults.  When they were released,  none of them would testify against either captor in court;  instead they began raising money for their defense.  What could have happened? Jazz? Capital No!

Well,

Nils Bejerot,  a Swedish criminologist, and psychiatrist coined the name of this disorder after the Stockholm police asked him for assistance with analyzing the victim's reaction to the 1973 bank robbery.  The Swedish criminologist and Psychiatrist called this disorder NORRMALMSTORGSSYNDROMET meaning "The Norrmalmstorg Syndrome" or as it will later be known outside Sweden as the Stockholm Syndrome;  originally defined by psychiatrist Frank Ochberg to aid the the management of hostage situation.

The Norrmalmstorg or Stockholm syndrome is a condition that causes hostages to develop a Psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity.  These alliances resulting from a bond formed between captor and captives during intimate time spent together are generally considered irrational in light of the damage or risk endured by the victims.

According to the FBI's Hostage Barricade Database system and Law Enforcement Bulletin,  roughly 8% of victim show evidence of Stockholm Syndrome. This condition is ostensibly paradoxical because captives feels sympathetic towards their captor instead of the normal feeling of fear and disdain.

The Stockholm Syndrome makes abused victims feels sympathetic,  an unusual love for their abusers,  ranging from victims of sexual abuse,  human trafficking, discrimination, terror, political and religious oppression. Victims instead of having a feeling of disdain towards their abusers feels love and sympathy for them.

Amongst Sexual abuse victims,  victims of childhood sexual abuse come to feel a connection with their abuser.  They often feel flattered by the adult attention or are afraid that disclosure will create family disruption. Funny thing is, the abused victims forms alliance with their captors in fighting the Police and Administrative rules put in place to ensure they have justice.

Notable Example Includes:

Natascha Kampusch
Kidnapped at age ten and kept in an insulated dark room under the garage of Wolfgang Priklopil. She would receive a variation of kind,  physically and sexually abusive,  controlling and permissive treatment from her captor.  Eight years after her Kidnapping,  Natascha left and Priklopil committed suicide.  After her Captors death, she lamented and kept a picture of him in Priklopil's estate (her prison) because she wanted to protect it from vandals and being torn down; she also noted that she has visited it since her escape. At the third anniversary of her escape approached,  it was revealed she had become a regular visitor at the property and was cleaning it out possibly to move in herself. Others include Patty Hearst and Colleen Stan.

PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS:

1) Cognitive: Confusion, blurred memory, refusal to accept reality of events and recurring flashbacks.

2) Emotional: Lack of feeling,  fear,  helplessness, hopelessness, aggression, depression, guilt, dependence on captor and development of Posttraumatic Stress disorder.

3) Social: Anxiety,  irritability, continuous and estrangement.

4) Physical: Development of health condition due to possible restriction from food, sleep and exposure to outdoor.

COPING MECHANISM.

From a Psychoanalytic lens, it can be argued that Stockholm Syndrome arises strictly as a result of survival instincts.  According to Strentz, "the victim's need to survive is stronger than their impulse to hate the person who has created the dilemma". A positive emotional bond between captor and captives is a "defense mechanism of the ego under stress". These sentimental feelings are not strictly for show, however since captives often fear that their affection will be perceived as fake, they eventually begin to believe that their positive sentiments are genuine.

The concept of Stockholm Syndrome has grown to include victims of Kidnapping or hostage instances,  domestic or Child Abuse, human trafficking, incest,  prisoner of war,  slaves,  cult members, prostitute etc. It is believed that women are especially prone to developing this condition.

Stockholm Syndrome typically develops in captives when they engage 'face to face contact' with their captors and when captors make captives doubt the likelihood of their survival by terrorizing them into helpless, powerless and submissive states.  This enables captors to appear merciful when they perform acts of kindness or fail to beat, abuse,  or rape the victims. Ideas like dominance, hierarchies and submission strategies assist in devising explanations for the illogical reasoning behind the symptoms of those suffering from Stockholm Syndrome as a result of any oppressive relationship.

RECOVERY.

it involves Psychiatric or psychological  counselling,  where the patient is helped to realize that their actions and feelings stemmed from inherent human survival techniques. The process of recovery includes reinstating normalcy into the lives of victims,  including helping the victim learn how to decrease their survival driven behavior..

I believe strongly in the power of God to heal emotional conditions, and correct everything that went wrong.
